Amidst much hue and cry about safety measures for the prevention of Coronavirus, MGNREGA labourers in many parts of State were spotted working under an unsafe environment. One such case was reported from different panchayats of Kanker district of Chhattisgarh where labourers, engaged in MGNREGA work, were seen sweating out without wearing masks and in the absence of arrangements for hand washing at the work site.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Youth Wing President Jitendra Todekar alleged that advisory of Central Government as well as State Government was being openly violated by the local authorities at Sargikot village of Chargaon panchayat in Koyalibeda block, Binapal panchayat of Antagarh block and Kodagaon panchayat. AAP Youth Wing state Vice-President alleged that the labourers here were working under adverse condition. They had not been provided with masks, hand sanitisers or shops and other safety materials, so that they can protect themselves from dreaded coronavirus.

The AAP youth wing leaders demanded from the local administration for proper arrangements for labourers for their safety. Kanker District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Kanauje said that he had asked all the janpad panchayat chief executive officers for strict implementation of advisories issued by the State Government. The safety of labourers is utmost priority of the government. When contacted, the CEO assured of looking into the matter if there was any negligence.
