Mahatma Fule Market to restart from tomorrow after two-day sanitisation

After witnessing closure for two-days i.e on Sunday and Monday, the wholesale vegetable market of Kalamna will resume operations from Tuesday morning while the vegetable market of Mahatma Fule (Cotton Market) will commence on April 1. According to information, Tukaram Munde, Municipal Commissioner of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had convened a meeting of vegetable wholesalers of Cotton Market on March 29. He directed them to close the market for sanitisation and cleaning purpose. Sheikh Hussain, President of Mahatma Fule Sabji Fruit Adatiya Association had written a letter to Tukaram Munde, NMC Commissioner seeking permission to open the market from April 1.

Ram Mahajan, Secretary said, “Mahatma Fule Vegetable Market is spread on an area of 10 acre while the vegetable market at APMC Kalamna is situated on an area of 2.5 acre. There is less chance of spreading coronavirus due to social distancing in Mahatma Fule Market.” Nanda Kishore Gaur, President of Yuva Adatiya Sabji Association, APMC Kalamna said, “As per the instructions of APMC authorities, vegetable market will re-open on March 31 and trading will continue till further instructions.”

Gaur said, although the wholesale market of Kalamna was closed for two days, the authorities failed to clean and sanitise. He said, both the whoesale vegetable markets-- Kalamna and Mahatma Fule (Cotton Market) should continue trading simultaneously to keep rush of people at arms length. “When the Maharashtra Government has assured that the supply of essential items like vegetables, foodgrains, medicines, groceries etc., will not be snapped.

Then why the timing of opening the two wholesale markets is different,” Gaur wondered. Chandrakant Dhoble, social worker said, “If vegetables are supplied at doorsteps, then rush of people on the road will decrease. Retailers and vendors bring vegetables from both the markets and we get fresh vegetables at reasonable prices. The supply continue to cater the needs of people.” Anant Dond said, “Farmers are accustomed to sell their agriculture produce in wholesale markets as they bring in bulk. Directing them to sell the vegetables will serve no purpose. Farmers in lieu of wholesale markets will not take risk to sell vegetables at different locations. Even retail markets at various locations should be allowed to operate with all precautionary measures so that people in city will not traverse from one place to another in search of vegetables during the lockdown period.”
