MUHS postpones PG exams, starts on-line lectures

Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has postponed Post Graduate (PG) medical examinations against the backdrop of coronavirus outbreak. These examinations were to begin on May 12 and Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) pressed for the postponement of the examinations. The delegation met Amit Deshmukh, Medical Education Minister who happens to be the Pro-Chancellor of the University. He forwarded the demand of MARD to Vice-Chancellor and asked him to look personally into it.

Vice Chancellor Dr Dileep Mhaisekar finally decided to postpone the examinations to June. Now the examinations have been pushed to June 15. “The opinion and insistence of our Pro-Chancellor was very obvious. I respect demand of MARD also. I only had to check the examination of DNB as I wanted to avoid crossing of these examinations. I co-ordinated with examination agency that conducts DNB that informed me it too was postponed,” said Dr Mhaisekar. Dr Mhaisekar, well-known Pulmonologist, co-ordinated with Dr Randeep Guleria, Director of AIIMS, Delhi and a pulmonologist.
 
MUHS tied up with AIIMS Delhi for teaching ventilator management. As classes are not held, on-line lectures on ventilator management that plays important role in treatment of coronavirus are prepared. MUHS has sent these lectures to its students who are listening to them. “On the lines of such lectures, we have prepared such audio clips involving several teachers of various specialties and sent them to our students who can prepare themselves through it. This can compel them get engrossed in studies. The lectures on ventilator management are useful not only for the students but also for the nurses and other paramedical staff. I have suggested the Deans of Medical Colleges to forward them to the paramedical staff as they are the frontline healthworkers,” explained Dr Mhaisekar. The students while sitting in the wards can listen to these lectures. 
 
Despite mother’s illness, Tope giving 100% in COVID-19 fight His old mother was in ICU when Coronavirus outbreak began. Rajesh Tope, Public Health Minister of Maharashtra did not leave any stone unturned. This period is very crucial as coronavirus cases are at their peak. Tope is playing very important role has to be on his toes. Everyday some or the other development takes place, new guidelines come and Tope has to keep delivering. Mother’s illness has not deterred his confidence and he focussed on his duties. Tope did not remain behind in moral boosting of police, healthworkers. He is now planning to write letters to doctors, nurses, attendants who are on the front in the fight against coronavirus. Whether the letters will be sent to every individual or to hospital is not certain. But appreciation from the Minister would mean a lot for healthworkers. At present Tope daily takes stock of several safety equipment for healthworkers, consumable items, testing kits. He also has to explain to public not to rush for the essential commodities as their distribution would never be stopped.
