RAIPUR,

Desperation for alcohol claimed lives of two in Raipur on Wednesday as they consumed medical spirit as replacement of liquor. “Two persons in Raipur’s Banstal area, under Gole Bazaar police station limits, died on Wednesday reportedly after consuming spirit as replacement for alcohol while one other is in critical condition,” said Kotwali City Superintendent of Police (CSP) D C Patel. Amid lockdown, liquor shops, bars and other sources of alcohol have been shut across Chhattisgarh till April 7.

The deceased were identified as Asgar Hussain (42) and Dinesh Samudre (39) while Ajay Kunjam (40) is undergoing treatment in Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Hospital Raipur, said CSP Patel. Samudre was a sanitation worker, added CSP Patel. “Prima-facie investigation and recovery of medical spirit from the house of a deceased gives clear indication that they have consumed the spirit as replacement of liquor. Exact reason for the death will be clear after arrival of autopsy report,” stated CSP Patel.

Police sources informed that on Tuesday night, the trio consumed spirit and their condition deteriorated as they reached home. Hussain and Samudre died on Wednesday morning while Kunjam was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Soon after getting information about the deaths due to consumption of spirit, police rushed to the locality and learnt that Samudre was taken to crematorium for funeral. The police seized the body and sent both the bodies for autopsy. The police is waiting for the postmortem reports to take the investigation ahead.
