RSS-affiliated trade union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) on Tuesday unveiled an action plan to deal with the current labour-related issues induced by the nationwide lockdown to contain the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement, the BMS said in a series of meetings chaired by its National President C K Saji Narayanan and General Secretary Virjesh Upadhyay, the body has prepared an action plan to deal with five major labour-related issues.

Pathetic condition of migrant workers, huge job losses, refusal to pay wages, unilateral suspension of labour laws and increase in working time to 12 hours and unbridled privatization are the five major issues that emerged due to the lockdown. The body’s phase-wise action plan focuses on the solution to these issues, the statement said. The BMS has proposed to start help desks to assist contract workers particularly in big industrial areas, PSU and government sectors. Help desks will also be started to assist agricultural workers, daily-wage workers, self-employed workers, etc. Throughout the country, the BMS said. The Government announced the nationwide lockdown from March 25, 2020.

Following the lockdown, lakhs and lakhs of migrant labourers working in various parts of the country started moving towards their home states. Meanwhile, over a dozen states including BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat either made amendments or proposed changes to existing labour laws. Industry-wise seminars will be organised on June 13th and 14th on issues like corporatization of defense production units, PSU in strategic sectors, providing livelihood to lakhs of migrant workers.
