THE Sports and Youth Services Department, Government of Maharashtra, has decided to grant sports grace marks to basketball players of the State and hockey players of Vidarbha for the 2019-2020 academic session. A letter has been issued by the department to all district sports officers. The participation certificates, issued by the committee of Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and Hockey India to Vidarbha Hockey Association players (boys and girls) will be valid for awarding sports grace marks to the State hoopsters as well as Vidarbha hockey players.

Basketball, as well as hockey players, had represented their respective districts and Vidarbha teams during their 10th and 12th board sessions. Vidarbha Hockey Association is being run by an Administrator while the Maharashtra State Basketball Association (MSBA), currently suspended by the BFI, is looked by an ad-hoc body. The basketball governing body of the country has named a three-member committee for the smooth conduct of the game in Maharashtra, as per the directions of High Court.

Similarly, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court has appointed Triloki Nath Sidhra as the Administrator of Vidarbha Hockey Association. According to the letter issued by Om Prakash Bakhoriya, Commissioner, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Maharashtra, certificates signed by the BFI, Hockey India and VHA Administrator would be considered as valid to grant grace marks to the sportspersons. As far as basketball is concerned there are around 700 cagers, both boys and girls, who would be benefitted from this order. In hockey, at least 30 players from all over Vidarbha, who were in Class X and XII, will be eligible to get the sports marks. “It is a very positive news.

I thank all the concerned authorities for including Vidarbha Hockey Association as well in the list. It is now the duty of the players to fill the online form and submit them in time,” said Triloki Nath Sidhra, Administrator, VHA. “For the past few years, hockey players of the region were deprived of these important marks. At least a few dozen players would be benefitted now,” he hoped.
