RAIPUR,

ALTHOUGH widespread monsoon showers were well anticipated by the weathermen, people all over the state on Monday woke up to a very cloudy morning, followed by torrential rains with some places witnessing heavy and some moderate showers. Raipur recorded 56.3 mm rainfall during 24 hours of showers till Monday evening. This state-wide seasonal weather phenomenon, which also brought the mercury down to coolest levels, kept most of the life across the state a bit low-profile as people preferred to stay indoors.

The religious pandits have termed the widespread rainfall and inclement weather as a common climatic feature that coincides with the annual Jaganath Rath Yatra to be celebrated on June 23. Meanwhile, MeT Center, Raipur has issued warning of heavy rainfall and lightning at one or two places in the state on June 23. The 24-hour flurry of Southwest Monsoon rains also cast its shadow over normal life in state capital, since low visibility and misty condition prevailing over Raipur skies affected vehicular movement as motorists had to ply slow with caution.

As a result, there were reports of traffic snarls at some busy and prominent city roads and highways passing through State Capital. So much so that the sudden weather shift witnessed clogging and over flowing of drains, water entering homes in low-lying areas along with roads being inundated in many areas and power outage across the capital city. Overflowing drains and roads inundated with filthy waters caused problems in areas like Devendra Nagar, Paras Nagar, Mandi Road, Jhanda Chowk, Jagganath Chowk and nearby Maati Mohalla, near Mandi Gate Chowk, Noorani Chowk, Ghadi Chowk, MLA Guest House, near Aakashwani, Moti Bagh Chowk and many surrounding areas in the city on Tuesday. During the daylong widespread showers on Monday, Gurur recorded highest rainfall of over 180mm followed with Chhura 170mm, Balod, Gariaband, Dhamtari, Antagarh and Gunderdehi 130mm, Mainpur and Saraipali 120mm, Patan, Makdi, Narayanpur and Magarlod 110mm, Charama, Basna, Nagri and Baderajpur 100mm, Baghbahra, Keshkal, Dondi, Narharpur, Kanker, Farasgaon, Bhanupratappur and Bhaiyathan 90mm and Geedam 80mm. Similarly, Kurud, Bhopalapatnam, Deobhog, Kondagaon, Sarangarh and Rajnandgaon received 70mm rainfall while Durgukondal, Mainpur, Mahasamund, Dantewada, Rajim, Bakawand, Katekalyan and Abhanpur 60mm, Usur, Dabhra, Bijapur, Orcha, Ambagadhchowki, Bastanar, Churiya, Pirhora, Mohla, Dondilohara, Durg and Pakhanjure 50mm along with Premnagar, Bagicha, Kasdol, Bhairamgarh, Manora, Dongargaon, Bastar, Batouli, Tokapal and Bilaspur 40mm rainfall. Many places received rainfall below 40mm across the state.

Apart from Rajnandgaon, maximum temperature was below normal in all districts across the state owing to collateral effect of weather shift on Monday. Jagdalpur retained the tag of ‘lowest maximum’ temperature with 20.9 degree, but the mercury here plummeted by merely 2 degrees only. However, in Raipur and Durg, the mercury took a dive of 10 degrees below the ‘normal maximum’ temperature mark to record 25.0 degrees and 26.6 degrees respectively. While talking to this scribe, Senior Meteorologist of Meteorological Center, Raipur H P Chandra said, “a cyclonic circulation over north interior Odisha and neighbourhood persists and now seen between 0.9 km and 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height. Besides, a trough at mean sea level from northwest Bay of Bengal across Haryana, South Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and north coastal Odisha persists and now extends upto 0.9 km above mean sea level.” The Senior Meteorologist further informed that under the influence of these two systems, widespread rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh during next 24 hours.

Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Chhattisgarh however mostly north western Chhattisgarh areas that will be mainly affected. The sky will be generally cloudy over Raipur with chances of thundershowers along with rainfall in the evening or night hours on June 23. Maximum temperature is expected around 28 degrees in the city on Tuesday, he added.
