With monsoon arrived in Steel City, the residents have started buying raincoats and umbrellas for the rainy season while, the umbrella makers and shopkeepers are hoping to make some brisk business after a dull period of nearly two and half months due to lockdown. With incessant rains in Bhilai over the last couple of days, the demand for umbrellas and raincoats is rising and roadside vendors, retailers and umbrella makers seem to be ready for the monsoon sales with trendy and latest stock of umbrella and raincoats.
 
The city market and avenue side makeshift shops can be seen flooded with new types of designer and trendy umbrellas. Customary black colored umbrellas have been mostly preferred by office goers and senior citizens while designer umbrellas with frills, bubbles, check prints and imagery of cartoon characters for children. Small umbrellas which can be fitted inside the purse and cartoon print umbrellas are the hot pick amongst the customers. Umbrella and rainwear makers are expecting good business this monsoon season, with rainfall projected to be at normal levels.
 
Apart from umbrellas, raincoats, hats, tarpaulins are also in demand, said Ratanlal, a garment retailer at Power House Market while adding that the customer flow will increase gradually and pick up by mid of July month. He added that umbrellas in different shapes, sizes, prints and brands and cost ranging from Rs 120 to Rs 800 are available. Children prefer raincoat over umbrella. A black umbrella still remains a favourite for most of the buyers,” he added. A college girl, Nisha Gupta, who was seen buying a neon orange umbrella with frills at a shop in Power House Market, said that many of her friends have bought umbrellas from online stores, but she preferred to step out for buying the perfect one.
 
She added that for her, umbrellas have become a fashion statement. Besides umbrellas, raincoats are also in high demand and are also available in all lengths, colours, weights and styles for all age groups at a cost ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000 in the local markets.In addition, residents are also finding comfortable, spongy and flexible footwear for the monsoon season. Footwear with foam sole are preferred the most and are available in Rs 150 to Rs 400 range.
