GENERAL reason to defend left-arm spinner Rajinder Goel missing out on the India cap always was the presence of too much talent in singe era. It is only a partial truth that Goel also knew but always chose to discard it as a whining point. He never wanted to live life with grudges despite losing on the deserving national berth to contemporary great Bishan Singh Bedi. Goel’s passing away after a prolonged battle with cancer has brought the final curtain on the career of an unsung hero. With a rich bag of 750 First Class wickets, Goel did not have to say anything about his abilities. Yet, an untold pain remains in the heart for fading of a stalwart who could not achieve greatness due to faulty selection process. Old timers will recall the accuracy he had as a spinner as he could make life difficult for even the best in the game. Fellow players rightly acknowledged the polite bowler’s uncanny ability to pick wickets on any surface. Despite the raw deal that fate offered him, Goel has left a rich legacy of tenacity and doggedness for team’s cause, no matter if it was a State team or national. The legacy will live on.

RIGHT THINKING

UPPING the ante following the growing sentiment of teaching a lesson to China for its misdeeds in the Galwan Valley, the Government has made a fine beginning to boost domestic manufacturing as a strategy to hit the warmongering neighbour. The latest thrust on promoting ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ aims at achieving two big goals -- cutting down on import dependence on China and provide the local markets with an equal alternative. By seeking suggestions and comments from the domestic industry to find ways to curb low-quality imports from China, the Government has sent an assuring message to India Inc. on its crucial role in India’s response to Chinese belligerence. Imports from China are in a wide range, from wrist watches to steel. Quality of certain cheap goods was always in question but petty traders did not bother about it for the profit margins. Change in quality control rules for in-bound shipments, especially from China, is the need of the hour. Each step in this direction will go a long way for India.
