IN A sudden twist to the ongoing rainy season, the unexpected ‘Monsoon Break’ for last two days has increased the temperature and the humidity level on Friday. Though Chhattisgarh has received 73 per cent excess rain - recording an average of 258.7mm rainfall against the normal of 149.6 mm - from June 1 to 26, the sudden 2-day break in several districts has raised concern among the agricultural sector across State.
 
The South-West Monsoon being the peak time for the paddy harvesting season, the sowing of paddy sapling has reached its final stage. However, the sudden dry climatic conditions has instilled fear among the farming community of crop getting damaged in the initial stage of plantation. Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Jagdalpur received no showers on Friday. However, Raipur-based MeT Centre has stated of Bilaspur receiving 25.8mm, Ambikapur – 13.7mm and Pendra Road – 1.0mm rainfall during the day.
 
The Meteorological Centre informed that a trough runs from Bihar to East Vidarbha across North Chhattisgarh while another trough passes from Punjab to East Bihar across Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on Friday. Similarly, the cyclonic circulation over South-West and and adjoining South-East Bay of Bengal has merged with an East-West shear zone tilting southwards.
 
Under the influence of these three systems, heavy rainfall and thunderstorm, along with lightning, are very expected at isolated places of State on June 27 and 28.
 
In the statewide rainfall forecast, the MeT Centre has indicated scanty rainfall on June 27 followed by the widespread showers for next three days.
However, in the general forecast, there is a possibility of moderate to medium rainfall or thundershowers at some places in the state on June 27. The sky is expected to be partly cloudy with thunderstorm accompanied by rainfall is likely in the evening or night hours in Raipur city on Saturday.
 
Meanwhile, Surajpur district recorded highest rainfall of 423.9mm against the normal 132.0mm while Surguja was the only district to record 2 per cent deficit rainfall receiving 176.4mm against the normal of 179.8mm during the ongoing seasonal rains in the state from June 1 to 26. The rainfall received by other districts are Raipur – 237.6mm (134.8mm), Balod – 276.0mm (normal 148.3mm), Baloda Bazar – 184.6mm (113.4mm), Balrampur – 234.0mm (149.3mm), Bastar – 218.7mm (199.1mm), Bemetara – 203.6mm (129.7mm), Bijapur – 253.7mm (161.8mm), Bilaspur – 240.0mm (136.2mm), Dantewada – 259.0mm (138.5mm), Dhamtari – 276.5mm (133.7mm), Durg – 261.8mm (148.6mm), Gariaband – 245.7mm (159.3mm), Janjgir – 172.3mm (125.6mm), Jashpur – 300.6mm (196.6mm), Kabirdham – 115.6mm (107.1mm), Kanker – 266.4mm (156.2mm) and Kondagaon – 358.5mm (158.9mm).
 
Similarly, Korba district received 369.8mm rainfall against the normal of 140.7mm, Koriya – 261.4mm (148.3mm), Mahasamund – 351.7mm (152.4mm), Mungeli – 185.0mm (113.5mm), Narayanpur – 260.5mm (152.2mm), Raigarh – 263.5mm (172.1mm), Rajnandgaon – 260.6mm (131.5mm) and Sukma – 229.7mm (147.7mm).
