unfortunate

IT IS truly unfortunate that the Congress party is constantly keeping itself engaged in opposing whatever the Narendra Modi Government does or says. In that senseless tirade, the Congress leaders do not spare even the firm stand the Government has taken as regards the developments in eastern Ladakh in the past one and a half months.

The country’s main Opposition party, thus, does not realise that it is antagonising even the brave Armed Forces that have kept the country’s sovereignty and integrity intact despite many odds. Actually speaking, this current conduct of the Congress leadership is in tune with its earlier approach when it doubted the honesty of the Army after the very successful surgical strikes and the Air Force after the very successful air-strikes. The Opposition, led by the Congress party, had questioned the official version issued by the Armed Forces and doubted if the strikes had really been conducted. This doubting was nothing but an assault on the morale of the Armed Forces.

It also ran counter to the national sense of pride that the Armed Forces had done a marvellous job in showcasing their prowess in the most telling manner. Again, that approach, too, was consistent with the Congress party’s earlier stand during the first tenure of the Modi Government when it raised questions about the integrity of the Government on every possible point, though totally senselessly. So drunk had the Opposition, and especially the Congress party, become by its obstinacy that it coined a unthinkable phrase Chowkidar Chor Hai referring to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The context was that of its allegation of corruption in the Rafale Aircraft Deal, even though all possible forums in the country had debunked the corruption theory. Even the honourable Supreme Court also found nothing objectionable in the process the Government had followed. That range of legal episodes also saw Congress leader Mr. Rahul Gandhi apologise for having distorted the court’s observation.

No matter that, the slogan Chowkidar Chor Hai continued dominating the Congress party’s political discourse, ultimately leading to its massive electoral debacle. However, as the country realised, the Congress leadership did not realise its follow and continued opposing the Government senselessly on every point. It is continuing with that policy even now, not realising that it is inviting its political doom in the near future. There still are many people who have an ideological closeness to the Congress party. They had been voting for the party no matter what. But in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 2019, that voter-base also seemed to have eroded in a big measure, reducing the party to a non-descript political entity with only big name and small minds.

It is obvious that internally, the party does not have any democratic functioning, which is pushing the organisation deeper into a mess from which it may find it difficult to emerge. Of course, the past some days have seen its old mistakes seem to be getting back at the Congress party. Yet, if it stops its senseless opposition to the Modi Government, it may have some chance to recover from the setbacks it received in the past few years. But will the wise counsel prevail? -- is the question.
