Gariaband Police on Tuesday caught a smuggler and seized a leopard hide from his possession. The accused was nabbed while he was looking for a customer to dispose of the hide. Superintendent of Police (SP) Gariaband Bhojram Patel, on receiving inputs about a man at village Shuklabhata searching for customer to sell a leopard hide kept in the carrier box of his motorcycle, sent a special team to the spot. Police team consisting of Station House officer Shobha Santosh Jaiswal, Head Constable Vijay Mishra, Constable Angad rao, Constable Sushil Pathak, Constable Chudamani Devta, Constable Deepnath Pradhan, constable Jai Prakash Mishra, Constable Devendra Parihar, Constable Sunil Pandey, Constable Sona Yadav and Constable Manoj Dhruw cordoned off the suspect and took him in custody. On interrogation, the man introduced himself as Buduram Gond, resident of village Vijaypur Odisha.
 
Regarding the hide, the accused told that he had killed the leopard by poisoning the water. He completely cured the leopard hide complete with claws and nails before taking it out for selling. The hide kept in the motorcycle was confiscated in front of witnesses. He had no valid documents regarding the hide. He was booked under Section 52 of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Section 3 of Defacement of Public Property and sent to judicial remand. Gariaband has been acting against cannabis, illicit liquor and diamond smugglers. All the Station House Officers have been directed to increase the vigil.
 
As a result, the police have caught smugglers with pangolin hide, leopard hide and other wildlife pelts recently. SP Gariaband awarded Rs 10,000 to Shobha Police Station staff. SP Patel also announced to continue the action against cannabis, gambling, illicit liquor, diamond smuggling and wildlife smuggling.
