While authorities of civic body are basking in accolades, yet, on ground something is destined never to change. Very much surprising fact is that the sorry state of affairs prevails in backyard of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) headquarters. Yes in Civil Lines, one can see for itself the dirt and slush surrounding Central Telegraph Office (CTO) and spot is hardly 150 metres or so from Central office of civic body and yet senior officials have conveniently turned a blind eye to the glaring problem. The nullah flowing by side of CTO compound has only been cleared only one side as the drive to clear all water flowing bodies may have lost steam just as it neared Civil Lines area. So for the residents living in surrounding area, besides Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce, now foul smell has become a everyday companion. Adding to problem is menace of pigs in the area that is giving nightmare to citizens.

Someone living in the Mariyam Nagar has invested heavily in pigs and rearing those putting people in vicinity in a spot. During day time these pigs roam around in the nullah and no one dares to complain against them. In past though NMC officials were alerted but then no action was initiated. A month back, NMC patted itself on its back for clearing the encroachments on Gaddigodam Link Road. But alas civic officials failed to see mushrooming encroachment just near its headquarters that too in posh Civil Lines area. Road side garages have sprang-up around Mariyam Nagar slums with scant regard to cleanliness. Even the huge compound wall of CTO has providing support for some illegal structures. The Hitavada spoke to some people in the neighbourhood who complained that during night time the foul smell from the nullah has made their lives miserable.

The stench travels quite far and even in those who reside in multistoreyed building say it's impossible to even sit for few moments in their balconies and enjoy the weather during this time of the year. While the bank of nullah flowing adjoining Mariyam Nagar slum seemed to have been cleaned thoroughly, the portion flowing behind Institute of Science appeared dirty. Unwanted plants and rags could be seen lying on the bank of the nullah indicating that someone has indulged in shortcut while undertaking cleaning of water bodies of city during pre-monsoon works.

A civic team was seen sweeping the streets and cleaning the mud that has accumulated by road side, especially near the storm water drains. However one portion of road over the nullah was left untouched as here the situation gets complicated when it rains. The thick mud converts into slush thereby further adding to the problem. Several illegal structures have mushroomed on the road yet civic officials it seems have conveniently turned a blind eye to the problem. The way road side garages are expanding one day the activity might extend upto Science college square.
