Amidst reports of an ongoing tug-of-war between Raj Bhawan and State Government over power sharing, a four-member delegation of Cabinet ministers of Chhattisgarh Government met Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Thursday and urged for her signature on the pending bills including all important University Amendment Bill. The delegation comprising Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravindra Choubey, Forest Minister Mohd Akbar, Urban Administration and Development Minister Shiv Kumar Dahariya and Higher Education Minister Umesh Patel reached Raj Bhawan on Thursday and appealed the Governor for giving a go ahead to the bills waiting for her signature since long.

According to the ministers, pending of Bills with Raj Bhawan is causing delay to start several developmental activities in the state. One of the important bills pending with the Governor is University Amendment Bill. If sources are to be believed, the State Government wants to wrench the Governor’s power to appoint a Vice Chancellor of state-run universities apart. The Bill also recommends the change of name of Kushabhau Thakre University of Journalism and Mass Communication (KTUJM). It is to be mentioned, the power of appointing a Vice Chancellor has so far been with the Raj Bhawan but now State Government wants to take it to its own control. The Governor reportedly said that she is not the one who is responsible for the delay in the clearance of the Bills rather the departments concerned are responsible. Meanwhile, the Governor told the minister, “We all want the development of Chhattisgarh.”

She further said that a thorough study of the patterns of other state universities and University Grants Commission provisions should be done before the approval of the University Amendment Bill. Besides, suggestion of experts on the Bill is vital before taking a final call. The aims of the Bill should be quality education, said the Governor, adding universities should provide excellent education to their students. The Governor told the ministers that soon she would convene the meeting of University Coordination Committee. She directed the Higher Education Minister to start preparations for the meeting. Choubey urged the Governor for giving momentum to appoint vice chancellor of Horticulture University.

It is worthwhile to mention, the University Coordination Committee meeting is much-awaited keeping in view the examinations of universities and colleges. On other issues, the Governor said that she wants effective measures for solving problems of people on ground level. The Governor asked the minister for providing benefits to the tendu leaf collectors. Protection of Tribals’ interest should be utmost priority, she said.
