BHARATIYA Janata Party leader and Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon died at a private hospital in Lucknow early on Tuesday. He was 85. He was admitted to the hospital on June 11 with breathing problems, fever and difficulty in urination. He had taken oath as the Madhya Pradesh Governor on July 29 last year after serving on the same post in Bihar for nearly 11 months. He died at 5.35 am at Medanta Hospital, according to his son Ashutosh Tandon, who is a Cabinet Minister in Uttar Pradesh. Lalji Tandon is survived by his wife and three sons.
 
His mortal remains were consigned to flames at Gulala Ghat in Lucknow in the evening. State mourning has been declared in Madhya Pradesh for five days from July 21 following the demise of Governor Lalji Tandon. All Government offices remained closed on Tuesday. Giving this information in a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the Cabinet meeting has been postponed without any discussion on any issues as a mark of respect to Governor Lalji Tandon. Cabinet will meet on Wednesday. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed that the national flag will flow at half-mast in the State. No entertainment programmes will be organised in the State during the mourning period. Instructions are being sent to all districts in this regard. The entire Cabinet observed two-minute silence to pay tributes to Governor Tandon. In his condolence message, CM Chouhan said that Governor Lalji Tandon remained engaged in the service of the nation throughout his life.
 
His contribution will always be remembered. As Governor of Madhya Pradesh, he always gave guidance and inspiration in public interest. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, UP Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, State BJP chief Swatantradev Singh, a number of ministers and party workers were present during the cremation. The cremation was held with full State honours, spokesperson of BJP’s Lucknow unit Pushkar Shukla said. According to Medanta Hospital Director Dr Rakesh Kapoor, Tandon died following a cardiac arrest.
 
“He was admitted on June 11 and on investigation he was found suffering from a liver ailment. Later, liver and kidneys stopped functioning and he was put on the life support system. Despite all efforts, he breathed his last on Tuesday morning,” Kapoor said. Lalji Tandon’s body was kept at his official residence in Hazratganj and later at his Sondhi Tola home in the Chowk area for people to pay their last respects. UP Governor Anandiben Patel recalled Lalji Tandon’s contribution to the State’s politics. Rajnath Singh said, “I had the opportunity to work with Tandonji. MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan condoled the death of Tandon and paid floral tributes to the departed leader in Lucknow. His long public life was dedicated to serving people and he left his mark through his work.”
 
He was popular and the development works done by him are still praised by the people,” Singh said in a tweet. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP president Mayawati also expressed grief over Lalji Tandon’s death. “In his death, the country has lost a popular leader, capable administrator and a social worker who was an integral part of Lucknow,” the Chief Minister said. The Uttar Pradesh Government has announced a three-day mourning as a mark of respect to Lalji Tandon, a former cabinet minister, an official spokesman said. Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also condoled the death of the Madhya Pradesh Governor. Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Hriday Narayan Dixit too condoled the death of Lalji Tandon.

VICE PRESIDENT M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday condoled the death of Madhya Pradesh Governor and BJP veteran Lalji Tandon, saying he will be remembered for untiring efforts to serve society. “Shri Lalji Tandon will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh,” Modi said in a series of tweets. Tandon made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance to public welfare, Modi said. In his message, the Vice President described Tandon as a “people’s leader” who worked relentlessly for the upliftment of the downtrodden.
 
“He will be remembered as a dedicated social worker, great thinker, able administrator and a distinguished Parliamentarian,” the Vice President’s Secretariat tweeted. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Tuesday condoled the demise of Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon and paid rich tributes to the departed leader. Purohit said Tandon’s death was an “irreparable loss to the people of India” and expressed shock and grief over the veteran’s death. “He was a great statesmen, effective administrator and wonderful human being.
 
He devoted his whole life for the welfare of the people of India particularly of Uttar Pradesh,” he said in a condolence message released by the Raj Bhawan here. Tandon had served as UP Cabinet Minister, Leader of House and Leader of Opposition in that State Assembly, he recalled.
 
“He was (an) active Parliamentarian in Lok Sabha. His demise is an irreparable loss to the people of India,” Purohit added. The Governor conveyed his deep condolences to the bereaved members of the family and said he prayed to the Almighty God to rest his soul in peace. Palaniswami also recalled Tandon’s various positions in the past including that of Bihar Governor and recalled his “excellent public service.” “Mr Lalji Tandon’s death is a great loss to the people of Uttar Pradesh,” he said in a statement and extended his sympathies with the bereaved family members.
