ON FOURTH day of the MahaBasket Referee’s Clinic, organised by association of district basketball bodies of Maharashtra, Articles from 26 to 33 of the FIBA Basketball Rule Book were discussed. VP Dhanpal, who hails from Tamil Nadu, was guest for the session. An ex-service man, Dhanpal, who served the Indian Airforce, is a FIBA Commissioner who acted in many international events including South Asian Championship, FIBA Asia Cup at DOHA and 23rd FIBA Asia Championship for Women at Bengaluru.

Dhanpal answered the queries raised by aspirants and guided them on the aspects of officiating principles in basketball. Dr Sharad Bansode started with Article 26, a 3-second violation where a player cannot stay inside the restricted area for more than 3 seconds if the ball is in the front court with his team in control. Article 27 defines a closely guarded player where if an attacking player is closely guarded by a defensive player, he cannot hold the ball for more than 5 seconds.

Article 28 taught us regarding 8-second violation. As basketball is the second fastest game in the world, a team has to come to the front court with the ball in just 8 seconds otherwise it’s a violation. Article 29 is 24-second violation. Team has to take an attempt towards the ring within 24 seconds after getting possession of the ball. That too just 14 seconds to shoot if that possession got in the front court of the team. Article 30 was another important article about back court violation. If a team goes in the front court it cannot go to back court with the ball.

Article 31 is goal-tending and interference violation. When a defensive player touches or deflects the ball going towards the basket and the ball is above the ring coming in downward direction then it is called a ball tending violation and a basket is awarded to the offensive team. In the same situation if a defensive player touches a ring, or net or backboard or uprights causing a vibration it will be called interference and a basket will be awarded to the offensive team.

In Article 32 all types of fouls were discussed as a player is allowed to commit only five fouls in a match or only two unsportsmanlike or technical foul resulting in his disqualification. The last Article discussed on Wednesday was Contact General Principle in with different types of contacts are discussed. All the articles were elaborated along with the videos and discussing special situations. Shatrughna Gokhale, Shiv Chhatrapati Awardee and coordinator of the MahaBasket conducted the proceedings. Dr Parveen Kumar and Dr Amit Tembhurne looked after the technical support.
