Destiny is known to bring mixed outcomes of life’s two processes--birth and death. This was well reflected when a pregnant woman, after testing positive for coronavirus, delivered a healthy baby boy while on ventilator before breathing her last. A 20-year-old woman from Betul, Madhya Pradesh, with full-nine month pregnancy was admitted to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) on July 26 in a critical condition. She was suffering from respiratory failure, antepartam eclampsia. Hers was the fit case for Covid-19 so her throat swab sample was examined at IGGMCH.

Dr Sagar Pandey, Deputy Medical Superintendent, said, “Considering the condition of the woman, she was put on ventillator. All doctors under supervision of Dr Prashant Uikey, Head, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Medical Superintendent Dr Ravi Chavan with help from Dr Shobhna Bitey, in-charge of Department of Medicine endeavored to save the woman. Meanwhile, doctors tried to conduct her delivery whilst she was on ventilator. Two Residents from Gynaecology Department -- Dr Lata Asudani and Dr Deepti Kadam -- accompanied the team and the woman delivered a healthy baby boy.”

The woman tested positive for coronavirus and breathed her last on Tuesday. The baby has been handed over to her relatives. It was an emotional occasion for everyone present in the ward. The relatives were in dilemma on whether to express grief over passing away of that young woman whose was primigravida or to enjoy the moment over the birth of newborn. The baby’s sample yet has not been taken as what medical sciences say. His throat swab sample will likely be taken after 48 hours of the birth. If that sample tests negative then he would be declared corona-free.
