‘Correct terminology must be used for basketball coaching’

CORRECT terminology must be used for different aspects of basketball said, Arnika Gujar Patil, Shiv Chhatrapati Awardee and an international basketball player during during a session on Day Five of the MahaBasket Webinar, organised by various district basketball associations of Maharashtra. Patil introduced the participants to FIBA/WABC certification courses, their curriculum, international terminology and other online material to study basketball during the session. Patil, during her speech, focused on the use of same and correct terminology for addressing various aspects of the game.

“Same and correct terminology should be used from the grass root level so that when a player goes to a higher level such as national and international level, he or she is well prepared with the terms used globally and it’s easier for them to understand the game at a higher level,” Patil said. “Universally accepted terminology will also help the coaches of higher level especially the foreign coaches to connect with the players easily if players know the correct terminology used across the world,” Patil added.
 
Patil shared valuable information regarding Jr NBA programme, how to register for it, skill challenge programme, zonal and inter-zonal matches and participation in international tournament held at Orlando USA every year. She also briefed about WABC (World Association of Basketball Coaches) under FIBA, different types of levels to qualify for a certified coach of FIBA. Patil told the participants once they pass Level III, they not only receive certificate as a qualified FIBA coach but they also become eligible to become a FIBA facilitator or trainer by appearing for advanced examinations. She shared several links and websites with the participants so that they can learn more about coaching of basketball. Dr Deepak Mane, Director, Physical Education and Sports, Savitribai Fule Pune University, an ex-basketball player and a qualified referee, inaugurated the session.
 
Professor Prakash Ayde, Brahmapuri, District, Chandrapur was chairman for the session. Ex-national basketball player Suvarna Limaye introduced the chairman as well as the resource person. Professor Manoj Painjane, Nanded proposed a vote of thanks. Shiv Chhatrapati Awardee and Coordinator of MahaBasket, Shatrughna Gokhale conducted the proceedings. Dr Amit Tembhurne and Dr Praveen Kumar supervised the technical part of the Webinar. In the coming sessions. Rajesh Kshatriya, chief basketball coach of Government of Maharashtra will deliver a lecture on ‘Importance of Training Session’ with respect to players and coaches while the concluding session will have a live interaction with international players Shireen Limaye, Shiv Chhatrapati Awardee and Siddhant Shinde.
