Police to become the bridge between traumatic families and NGOs

What others learnt from coronavirus outbreak is another aspect, but Nagpur Police have brought so many positive things out of it. Nagpur Police under the leadership of Dr Nilesh Bharne, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), has not only served the poor and needy by becoming the bridge between them and NGOs but also provided jobs to them. Now, Nagpur Police have introduced two projects out of Atmanirbhar concept and it will work under ‘Together We Can’.

The police will do rehabilitation of the families having lost the earning member and also help the needy to get education, health facility and others. During lockdown, after finishing the community policing work in a slum, Dr Bharne came across a family, whose earning member died in an accident. The family became helpless with two small children and mother of the victim. While going home that day, Dr Bharne thought of doing something that would rehabilitate such families. “When we did the work of food distribution, transporting people we brought over 160 Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) together.

The Group has been working together in the areas of food, ration kit and essential supplies distribution throughout the city. It has also worked tirelessly with the Police Department to send the migrant workers to their respective homes by buses, trains, ambulances etc. I discussed my pain with them and they immediately responded to extend a helping hand,” explained Dr Bharne. During lockdown Dr Bharne witnessed cases of suicide, accidents. “People went into depression state as they lost jobs. There are families whose members got murdered. Such families left with no choice. Such families also need psychological counseling too, we will be providing that also to such families,” said Dr Bharne. Another project has been brought by Dr Bharne is regarding general help needed by some sections of the society.

For example, some families need medical help, some need to send their children to schools etc. “During this unlock time, the group has now decided to continue the relief effort in the fields of suicide prevention, counselling support, financial support to the people suffering from trauma post accidents, students requiring financial help for their coaching, education, and 12 other fields. A Central Office has been set up along with a Helpline for Facilitation for such families in Civil Lines area. A proper data of the needy families, along with their needs is being compiled by the NGOs. We will also help the NGOs to coordinate with each other,” informed Dr Bharne.

About ‘Together we can’ ‘Together we can’ is a syndicate of NGOs working together under the leadership of Additional Commissioner Dr Nilesh Bharne from the day one of the lockdown, during the period of COVID-19. “It will help in rehabilitating traumatic families. I created a system that will keep working even if I am in Nagpur or not. The system will have nothing to do with who the officer is, it will continue doing its work. Families whose members have committed suicide, people are in depression, lost jobs all will get the complete help. They only have to call on the helpline number given below,” said Dr Bharne. Helpline No. 7249871180 is being set up for Counselling Support, Inquiries and Help required for the above causes. Web Portal www.twcnagpur.com is being set up for information and coordination for the public.
