UNLIKE yesteryears, brothers on this Rakshabandhan will be able to have eco-friendly rakhis on their wrists. These environmental-friendly rakhis will be made of bamboo. Preparations have been started. As per information, women associated with various Self-Help Groups (SHG) across district Dhamtari are now-a-days engaged in making of bamboo rakhis. By doing so, they are not only promoting indigenous products, but are also empowering themselves.
 
It is for the first time that the women are making eco-friendly rakhis from Bamboo on a large scale in the district. In compliance with the directives of the Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, the self help group women are connected with employment through making of eco-friendly rakhis. These rakhis will be sold in the market for Rs 20 to Rs 200. Zila Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Namrata Gandhi informed that following the instructions of Collector Jai Prakash Maurya, the women associated with various women self-help groups were making eco-friendly bamboo rakhis. Gandhi said that these women were also making rakhis out of cow dung, giving beautiful designs to their rakhis.
 
CEO further informed that an elaborated training programme for rakhi making was held at Multi-utility Centre in village Chhati under National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). The training programme was attended by some 165 women of 20 self-help groups from not only village Chhati but also from village Chipli and village Nari of Kurud and Nagri development block. CEO said that now all the trained women were engaged in rakhi making and they had already received an order of making 1,200 rakhis till date.
 
CEO Gandhi further informed that the speciality of these rakhis is that the rakhis for children were designed with embroidery threads and keeping in view of the environment, rakhis were also made from Bamboo seeds. “The rakhis for children has cartoon characters on it whereas special rakhis for sisters-in-law are also designed by the women of self-help groups”, said Gandhi, adding that making eco-friendly Bamboo rakhis, the women were getting empowered while promoting the concept of using country-made products and environment conservation.
