Top cop’s initiatives bear fruits, crime rate down by 30% in 2 yrs

VARIOUS initiatives taken by Commissioner of Police Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay resulted in reduction of overall crime rate in the city by 30 per cent in the past two years. Dr Upadhyay, who completed two years of his tenure as City Police chief on Friday, detained 50 hardcore criminals under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Dangerous Persons, Video Pirates, Sand Smugglers and Persons Engaged in Black-Marketing of Essential Commodities Act.
 
Similarly, he booked 117 criminals belonging to 20 different gangs under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act between July 2018 and July 2020. Police initiated preventive action against 16,712 goons and arrested 1,121 anti-socials under the Arms Act. Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the City Police arrested 289 drug peddlers in 195 cases and seized narcotics worth over Rs 3.81 crore. Under Dr Upadhyay’s leadership, police launched operations ‘Crackdown, ‘Wipe Out’, and ‘Street Drive’, against criminals, including history-sheeters, and local goons. To check persons involved in different serious crimes, he launched ‘Criminal Adoption Scheme’ in every police station.
 
As per the scheme, each policeman checks five criminals, their movements and activities on regular basis. Similarly, Dr Upadhyay formed a special Intelligence Squad comprising 304 police personnel, including 76 officers, to maintain a strict vigil on criminals released from Central Jail. City Police digitised dossiers of 827 criminals and mailed it to all police stations from a centralised server.
 
The move was aimed at better maintenance of intelligence which is one of the requirements for a better crackdown on criminal elements. In the current year, cops succeeded in nabbing 81 wanted criminals. For overall maintenance of law and order, City Police chief implemented standard community policing schemes, launched women helpline and senior citizens’ helpline. Using latest technology, Dr Updhyay launched effective traffic management scheme.
