V RAMACHANDRAN snapped the unbeaten winning run of overnight sole leader Umesh Panbude in the 7th Kamal Kumar Barat Memorial Online Classical Chess Tournament on Thursday. On the top board of the sixth round, Ramachandran, playing with white pieces, outwitted Panbude. The result made both of the joint leaders with five points apiece on penultimate day of the four-day annual event for veterans (for players above 45 years) being organised by Nagpur District Chess Association.

The event is being played through lichess.org platform. Incidentally, in all the top five board matches, players playing with the lighter shades pocketed the match. Ramachandran, who had lost in his first match of the tourney, has now won five games in a row while it was first loss for Panbude. The two players following the top duo — Dilip Chepte and Vijay Thakur had logged 4.5 points each.

Chepte got the better of TS Patil while Thakur outsmarted Shankar Laha. With one round, to be played on Friday, remaining, the event is far from over as the fight for the top place is concerned. A win for Panbude or Ramachandran will ensure that they finish on top while Chepte and Thakur must win their matches and hope for some favourable results in other matches.
