JUST FOR THE HECK

CONGRESS party has formulated a 5-member committee to fashion its response to key Ordinances the Government has promulgated. The panel is expected to study the Ordinance and examine its effect in practice and advise the party how to respond officially. Though such exercises by Opposition are often witnessed in democracy, the effort of the Congress party appears more as a move to create argument opposing whatever the Government plans.

This has been the style of the Congress party for long. It has opposed the Government only for the heck of it, without much thought. In the process, it has suffered terribly in the elections for this habit. Yet, it appears that the leadership has learnt no lessons from the past.

The new 5-member panel will try to build a senseless argument opposing many moves by the Government -- in an effort to mislead the people. In this endeavour, it has made a mess of its own effort in the past as well, but to no avail. Indian democracy does need a responsible and sensible Opposition that would act as a watchdog on the Government. But such a seriousness is missing, then exactly an opposite purpose is served.

PRECIOUS PEARLS

IN THE world of excellence, skill does count a big deal. But what is more important than physical skill is the human emotion that triggers top-class action. Minus emotion, thus, most achievements appear as dry and customary. Ace hockey player Rani Rampal burst into tears the moment she came to know that she had been given the country’s top sports honour, the Khel Ratna Award.

Though her simple-minded parents did not understand why she cried, the world realised the burst of emotion that flooded Rani’s mind. Her tears, thus, assumed the importance of precious pearls that cannot be stored anywhere except in human memory. At the peak of their great performances in any field, countless human individuals are known to have cried unabashedly as they cannot control their sense of joy.

The tears also represent a quiet inner realisation of all the hard work that generally goes into making a great success possible. Because the road to the top is arduous and requires relentless pursuit until the finish, the achievers find it difficult to control their emotions, and so burst into tears. Each such tear -- shed across time -- has added to the glory of human achievement that is beyond words!
