Whatever we do, from our behaviour to our eating habits, exercise, sleep everything is all Ayurved. In fact Ayurved guides about following the proper lifestyle if everybody follows it then all will stay away from any kind of diseases. ‘The Hitavada’ talked to some Ayurved experts of city who said, Ayurved is lifestyle and lifestyle means Ayurved. They are not different. “Ayurved has given directions on how to live disease-free life. It guides us from how to brush, do the oil massage before bath, when to eat, how much to eat, what should we eat, when should we sleep, etc. In Ayurved, it is said everybody’s constitution is different so Ayurved has guidelines for every individual.

Ayurved has taken seasonal changes also on account. How much clean our atmosphere should be?” explained Dr Manisha Kothekar, Principal, Shree Ayurved College. Dr Kothekar said, “The food should not be eaten more than the body’s requirement. We have a habit of eating full stomach which is very wrong. At least a part in our stomach should remain empty.”

According to Dr Sunil Joshi, noted Ayurved expert, everything about lifestyle is well explained in Ayurved. “I don’t want to cast an aspersion on any other pathy but from my experience even in USA, I can surely say, Ayurved has all the answers to all the diseases. All ailments from headache to stomach-ache, Ayurved has solution all the ailments. Ayurved says, we don’t have to go out and search. The solution is in our body itself. Following Indian diet system can resolve several issues,” Dr Joshi pointed out. Dr Ranjana Waghralkar, well-known Ayurved expert, cautioned people not to behave against nature. “In the month of Shravan we should not eat onion and garlic as it damages our digestion system.

Ayurved says, “odd combinations in food give birth to ailments. Youngsters fall prey to such combinations and lose their immunity at an early age. Ayurved tells us to drink water immediately after we wake up without brushing, as it mixes the saliva which is alkaline. It helps us in not developing acidity. There are some bad elements in Ayurved as in distant villages some so-called Vaidus claim they know Ayurved. These Vaidus give wrong medicine and defame this pathy.” Dr Jayant Deopujari, Chairman, Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), Ayush, elaborated it further, “Excluding medicine daily life is lifestyle. Apart from what we do from brushing to going to sleep comes in Ayurved. But our behaviour like whether we tell lie or say truth also comes in it.

Ayurved says we should be honest which according to it is a sign of sound health. On eating, Ayurved has clearly said, one should first find out one’s satisfaction level and eat half of it. Always remember, taste or satisfaction is in our brain and not in stomach.” Dr Geeta Verma, noted Ayurved specialist put a valid point. She said, “Ayurved is not only about food or herbs but it is a way of life. In Charak Samhita it is advised to adapt to the science of Ayurveda in our daily routine, climate, local culture, food as well as medicine.

Ayurvedic perspective of an ideal lifestyle include following Dinacharya (daily regimen from sunrise to sunset), Rutucharya (seasonal regimen), Sadvritta (codes and conduct) all of which are instrumental in the prevention of diseases along with maintenance and promotion of good health. It enables us to create a balance of sharir (body), mana (mind) and aatma (consciousness) according to one’s prakruti (individual constitution).

The Ayurvedic system seeks to create a healthy and strong body through disciplined lifestyle practices.” Explaining the basics, Dr Dhanraj Gahukar, another well-known Ayurved expert pointed out, “Earth and water create cough, Agni creates Agni, Akash and Vayu create Vayu. If these things remain alright, our health is fine, if not, then we face health issues. Wrong food intake disturbs our health. Ayurved tells us to do things as per their timings. For example, day is for work, night is for rest. If we stay awake in night then we are sure to suffer from pitta (acidity) and wata (cramp), while if we sleep during day then it gives rise to cough. ‘Ayurved is life, life is Ayurved’ which one should follow scrupulously.”
