Heavy downpour in last 24 hours brings down rainfall deficiency of Nagpur Division to 3% 
 
Nagpur rains broke the season’s record on Monday. Heavy downpour since Sunday night caused water-logging across city. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Nagpur received 157.2 mm rainfall in last 24 hours which was the fourth highest for the city so far. On Monday, Nagpur was the rainiest place in the country and seventh rainiest in the World. On July 15 last, the city had received 100.8 mm rainfall which was the highest of the season then. Nagpur had witnessed the highest ever downpour in the year 1994 when over 314 mm rainfall was recorded in one single day.

Thereafter, a record 286 mm rainfall in a little over six hours had paralysed normal life in the city on July 6 in 2018 which was the second highest rainfall till Monday. Similarly, on June 26, 2013, the maximum rainfall in Nagpur recorded for 24 hours was 187 mm, and on Monday Nagpur received 157.2 mm rainfall which was the fourth highest for the city. While the number of rainfall in city in last 24 hours was in three digits, the division remained deficient by 20 per cent so far in the season. IMD stated that -0 to -20% is near normal rainfall and so the district has made up for the deficiency of the season.

However, the rainfall on Monday reduced the deficit of Nagpur district as the deficiency is now just 3 per cent which is the best across the division. Chandrapur (8 % deficit) and Wardha (7 % deficit) are also in a better position as compared to Gadchiroli (40% deficit), Gondia (28% deficit) and Bhandara (23% deficit) districts. According to the Weather department, Vidarbha will get more rains throughout the week with one or two heavy spells of heavy downpour. Gadchiroli (55 mm) and Wardha (45.6 mm) also received heavy rains on Monday.

Other places of the region including Buldhana (11 mm), Bramhapuri (11 mm), Washim (20 mm) and Yavatmal (10 mm) recorded rainfall in double digits while Akola (3.2 mm), Amravati (6 mm), Gondia (8.6 mm) received comparatively less rainfall. Chandrapur was the only place that remained dry on Monday. Meanwhile, heavy rains caused a flood-like situation in city, especially in low-lying areas since early morning. Rainwater gushed in many localities flooding houses even those near low-lying areas. Water-logging were reported from Hudkeshwar, Pipla Fata, Pipla Road, Shahu Nagar, Kumbharpura, Chuna Bhatti, Narendra Nagar, Manewada, Old Mangalwari and many other places. Most affected areas were those situated near Pili, Pohra and Nag rivers.
 
The areas continued facing water-logging till Monday morning. Similarly, water-logging was witnessed at junctions like Jhansi Rani square, Automotive square, Shankar Nagar square, Medical square, Narendra Nagar RuB, Hotel Radisson Blu square, WHC Road, Sadar etc. To add to the citizens’ discomfort power outage was caused following heavy rains in many areas.
 
The most iconic spot during monsoon -- Ambazari Overflow Point -- saw water overflowing from Ambazari lake since early Monday morning. Residents of low-lying areas in the city woke-up on Monday morning with a flood-like situation. Water-logging that happened after the heavy rains that started on Sunday night till morning caused huge damage to properties of citizens.
