BADMINTON coaches of the city have joined hands and requested Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to let them start indoor activities. Not only the sportspersons are suffering due to lack of activities, the coaches are suffering from acute financial crisis, they said in a detailed memorandum submitted to the Commissioner. Keeping with the State government’s guidelines, NMC has given relaxation to several outdoor sports in the city.

They have mentioned badminton as an outdoor sport. But only amateurs or those who play for recreation play it outdoors. Professional players, of all age groups, play indoors only. Nagpur boasts of good indoor facilities for the same but the authorities are reluctant to start any sport that is played indoors. However, badminton may become an exception as it is a non-contact and a non-team sport. Tennis activities on outdoor courts have started in the city.

Badminton coaches, in their letter, stated that for coaches, who train youngsters during the summer season from March to June-July, it is the only source of income. They have also accepted that the government has come out with various schemes and amenities but none is of their use. They said that it was becoming increasingly difficult for them to arrange even the basic needs for survival. They have promised to adhere by all norms and have even agreed to have a limited number of participants if they are given permission to start indoor activities. Among others sports that were cleared by NMC are — non-team sports like golf, outdoor firing, outdoor gymnastics, tennis and malkhambh.
