THE position of a responsible democracy and a voice of authority that India has gained for itself in the comity of top nations today is the sum of the deft, assertive, reactive as well as proactive foreign policy pursued by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi since the day he assumed the top office in 2014. Last six years under Mr. Modi have seen rigorous churning of international relations and won a distinct gravitas for India that was present only in patches.
The Prime Minister’s assertion that the world is paying more attention to India and the country’s voice is becoming global is manifestation of the confidence India has earned through foreign policy assertiveness. This position of strength is the face of a new India and its ability to change international perceptions on critical issues. India’s role as a voice of reason has become all the more profound in the last few months when the world was hit by the coronavirus pandemic. India not only provided timely help and aid to the world but also offered an assertive leadership through Mr. Modi’s clear vision and total faith in the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
The country now enjoys a very strong presence at almost every international body. It is the result of the rational thinking India offers on critical issues like world peace, economic relations, security, environment, ecology, and climate change. On each of the key issues, India’s voice has become a cornerstone for the international bodies to form their future thought and action. Foreign policy was supposed to be the weakest link when Mr. Modi took over as Prime Minister. In the initial days his gestures looked a continuation from his predecessors till the change became visible in the following years.
The biggest evidence of Mr. Modi’s diplomatic charisma came at Madison Square in 2014 which opened ways for a close working relationship between India and the United States. Subsequent articulation of the Indian thought in various countries catapulted the Indian Prime Minister to a thought leader in the international ecosystem. Be it the address at the United Nations or the keynote speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr. Modi has successfully presented a new India that seeks global unity and offers a new dimension to future alignments between nations. He has lent India a voice that just cannot be ignored.
