Dr Turkar throws light on
In order to create awareness among public regarding what to expect when having Chemotherapy Dr Siddharth Turkar, Consultant in NHMMI Narayana Super speciality hospital shared his view.

Dr Siddharth Turkar, Consultant Medical Oncology in NHMMI Narayana hospital informed that it is normal to feel worried or overwhelmed when one finds out that one will have chemotherapy. The information will help to prepare for first treatment. A team of highly trained medical professionals will work together to give the best possible care. Team will include, medical oncologist who specialises in treating cancer with medication. Oncologist works with other team members to make treatment plan. He is also in charge of chemotherapy treatments. An oncology nurse cares for people with cancer, including giving chemotherapy. He answers questions and helps support patient and family. Nurse also helps in keeping track of health during treatment. This can include managing any side effects. Other health care professionals include pharmacists, nutritionists, physical therapists, and dentists.

Most chemotherapy treatments are given in repeating cycles. The length of a cycle depends on the treatment being given. Most cycles range from 2 to 6 weeks. The number of treatment doses scheduled within each cycle also varies depending on the drugs being given.

Doctor will talk about the risks and benefits of chemotherapy. If one choose to have it, team will ask to sign an informed consent form. Signing the form means that patient gave written permission for treatment, team gave information on treatment options, patient choose to have chemotherapy and one understand that the treatment is not guaranteed to give the intended results.

Team will tell the patient what to eat, drink, or avoid on chemotherapy days so the treatment will work best. Tell doctor about any prescription and non-prescription medicines one takes. This includes vitamins and other supplements, such as herbs. It is a good idea to ask questions before treatment starts, regarding schedule and side effects of specific treatment. Learning more about warning signs of life threatening side effects and how to deal with it. Where one will receive treatment, such as the specific building and floor.

Depending on the most common side effects of chemotherapy, doctor may recommend planning for nausea and vomiting, hair loss, reproductive issues, and other side effects. An important part of cancer care is relieving side effects. This is called palliative care or supportive care.
