IN INDIA, according to National Crime Records Bureau, everyday 83 people die due to drowning with the basic reasons being lack of basic knowledge of water safety and lifesaving techniques. Introduction of lifesaving sports might help in reducing the figures, feels Dr Jaiprakash Duble, former Joint Director of Sports & Youth Services, Govt of Maharashtra. Duble was speaking on second and concluding day of the International Webinar on ‘Role of Youth Swimmers in Swim for Survival’.

The Webinar was organised with the support of Directorate, Sports & Youth Services, Govt of Maharashtra and JD Sports Foundation, India. Over 165 participants attended the Webinar from India, Bangladesh, Philippines, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia. “Society can be benefitted by keeping youth fit and creating lifesavers in every home. Government departments must run drives at the beaches and pools for training and promoting lifesaving sports.

The parents and government must take initiative to support it. A team of youth volunteers in every district of the state will also help in district disaster management,” Duble said. Earlier, Omprakash Bakoria, Commissioner of Sports & Youth Services, Maharashtra addressed the participants with his opening speech and emphasised on swimming skills in youth for fitness and drowning prevention. The expert speakers — Dr Shayne Baker (Australia), Dollah Said (Malaysia), Vitanya Chuayuan (Thailand) and Vijay Kumar Sah (WaterWorld-India), shared their work and experience with the participants. The Webinar helped youth to understand the importance of sports and specially the skill of swimming for survival, and its role in personal and nation’s development.

All participants were awarded with the certificate of participation. Jayant Duble, General Secretary, JD Sports Foundation, India extended his gratitude towards speakers of the Webinar and proposed a vote of thanks.
