Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra Government has appointed a new Task Force comprising experts including some of the former Vice-Chancellors, to ‘study’ the new National Education Policy-2020. It has been asked to submit a report to State Government in three months. Recently, Central Government paved way for implementation of NEP-2020. Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, had hinted at appointment of a new Task Force. Accordingly, Higher and Technical Education Department of State Government has constituted new Task Force with a mandate to ‘study’ NEP-2020 and submit a report to State Government.

The said Task Force has been tasked with studying ‘every point’ in NEP-2020 and submit the report in three months. It may hold meetings in various universities and also submit interim reports whenever required. The Task Force is headed by Dr Wasudha Kamat, former Vice-Chancellor of SNDT University, Mumbai. It comprises education experts including Dr Sukhadeo Thorat, former Chairman of University Grants Commission; Dr Pramod Yeole, Vice-Chancellor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad; Dr Rajan Velukar, former Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University; Dr Vilas Sapkal, former Vice-Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University; Dr Bhalchandra Munagekar, former Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University; Dr G D Yadava, former Vice-Chancellor of Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai.

Other experts in the Task Force include Dr Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University; Dr Devidas Golhar, Principal, Marathwada Commerce College, Pune; Prof Bhalchandra Birajdar, College of Engineering, Pune; Milind Satam, Senate Member, Mumbai University; Dr Ajit Joshi, Parle Tilak Management College, Mumbai; and Director of Technical Education, Mumbai. As can be seen the new Task Force is dominated by members from Mumbai. Niranjan Hiranandani, Managing Dierctor of Hiranandani Group, also is a member of the expert panel. Dr Sanjay Jagtap, Divisional Joint Director, Higher Education, Panvel, is Co-ordinator of the Task Force. Central Government had first floated the draft of National Education Policy (NEP), seeking opinion from State Governments.

Accordingly, State Government had constituted a Task Force in October 2015. Then, the Task Force was asked to compile and present an analysis of the suggestions received during tehsil and district level workshops regarding draft NEP-2020. However, after coming to power, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Government in State cancelled appointments of all non-official members in the said Task Force appointed by previous Government.
