Man cheated on pretext of COVID treatment

Taking the advantage of pandemic, two persons, including a staff nurse, of State government-run Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Hospital Raipur, allegedly cheated a man in State capital on the pretext of offering COVID-19 treatment in home isolation. The accused identified as Rakesh Chandra Singh (32), hailing from Durg district, and staff nurse Deepa Das, were booked on charges of cheating Santosh Tolwani, a resident of Shankar Nagar, on the pretext of COVID-19 treatment in home isolation, said police sources, adding that the duo has been arrested. One more name Verma also surfaced in the crime and police investigators are collecting details about this person, said police sources without elaborating more information.
 
“On September 19, the victim received a call from an unknown number and the caller enquired about the health condition of his family member. Later, a man introducing himself as Verma collected the sample from the victim’s house and later told him that his wife was tested positive for COVID-19. Eventually, staff nurse Deepa along with a man visited the victim house and administered an injection to the patient. Deepa had collected Rs 3,000 against the injection and total treatment cost in home isolation will be Rs 11,000.
 
This morning, Rakesh visited Tolwani’s house to collect the pending amount following which police were alerted and the crime came to light,” said police sources. Police investigators were interrogating Rakesh to find out the number of people they have cheated. In this connection, police have registered an offence against the accused duo under Sections 34 and 420 of IPC and launched a probe.
