Webinar on tug of war organised

A webinar on tug of war sport was held on Wednesday through Google Meet platform. The webinar was organised by Vasantrao Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Science. Dr DG Sontakke, HoD VNGIASS and Dr Chhaya Patil, Director, Physical Education Department, VNGIASS were the co-ordinators. Dr Zakir Khan Langa was the resource person who elaborated on the sport and its technicalities. Dr Sunitra Maharaj Patil, Principal, VNGIASS made the introductory remark.
 
Dr Zakir Khan Langa gave information about the national body, Tug of War Federation of India, which is headed by Dr Madhavi Patil and Mr Madan Mohan. The Indian federation is affiliated with Tug of War International Federation. He said that Tug of War was part of Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920 but has not been included since. The sport, though, is part of the World Games. “The Tug of War International Federation (TWIF), organises World Championships biannually, for both indoor and outdoor contests, and a similar competition for club teams,” said Dr Langa. Dr Langa also informed the participants about rules of the game and competitions organised by the university.
 
“A team comprises 10 players and two officials i.e. manager and coach while the maximum weight for men team consisting of 8 players is 640 kg and the same for women is 480 kgs,” he said adding that AIU competitions are held in Under 480 kgs category for outdoor women; 500 kgs for indoor Women, 560 kgs for outdoor mix 4+4, 600 kgs indoor men, 640 kgs outdoor men and 540 kgs indoor mixed 4+4 team. Different weight category will be allowed for Beach Competition.
 
Dr Langa also informed about the official clothing for teams during the competition. “Teams will wear normal sport clothing consisting of shorts, sport shirts on T-Shirts and knee-stockings and DRM Boot (Army/Police Boot) as per TWFI rules for outdoor competition.” Dr Langa also talked on various other rules of the game and penalties on infringements during the play. Dr Chhaya Patil proposed a vote of thanks.
