President awards 2 NSS volunteers virtually

Two National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of Chhattisgarh were conferred the NSS Awards for the year 2018-19 through virtual mode. President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the NSS Awards for the year 2018-19 to both NSS volunteers- Satyendra Sahu of BCS Government P G College Dhamtari and Rakesh Kumar of Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Engineering and Technology Bhilai through virtual mode. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju attended the ceremony from Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
 
Chhattisgarh Governor Anusuiya Uikey also attended the ceremony through video conferencing. Governor Uikey has congratulated both NSS volunteers- Satyendra Sahu and Rakesh Kumar for their achievements and wished them for their bright future. Satyendra Sahu and Rakesh Kumar were honoured with citation, silver medal and a cheque of Rs 1,00,000 virtually. The NSS Awards for the year 2018-19 was presented to 42 awardees in three different categories like University, NSS Units and their Programme Officers and NSS volunteers in the ceremony.
 
It may be mentioned that Department of Youth Affairs, Government of India confers the NSS Awards every year to recognize and reward outstanding contributions towards voluntary community service. NSS is a Central Sector Scheme which was launched in the year 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.
 
The NSS volunteers work on issues of social relevance, which keep evolving in response to the needs of the community, through regular and special camping activities. Such issues include literacy and education, health, family welfare and nutrition, environment conservation, social service programmes, rescue and relief during calamities.
