Maha Metro successfully launched Boa string girder across railway lines as part of construction of Manish Nagar railway overbridge (RoB) to provide seamless connectivity with Wardha Road to the emerging suburbs of city.
The 400 tonnes structure was placed across the two pillars, one on Manish Nagar side and the other one on Ujjwal Nagar side. The steel structure stretch 64 metre across and has width of 13 metre providing two lane road for travellers.
The placement of steel girder now enables construction of load bearing structure, the concrete slab for carriageway of the RoB that would enable faster movement across Southern and Western parts of city and
vice-versa. The RoB would be inter-connected with the Wardha Road fly-over at Ujjwal Nagar junction, providing up and downward movement by-passing the Somalwada railway crossing.
Central Railway's Nagpur Division provided block on intervening night of Friday and Saturday enabling placement of the huge structure successfully. The block period was from 9 pm till 1 am.
Post completion of RoB the stress on Somalwada railway crossing would ease to a great extent. For those desiring to reach Airport or move ahead on Wardha Road the RoB is a great boon.
However design change done by Maha Metro after it was entrusted the deposit work by NHAI has skewered the way of travellers wishing to travel towards Sitabuldi side. Such persons would now need to travel all the way till Sonegaon police station junction and thereafter take a U-turn and then again climb the new fly-over and cross the Ujjwal Nagar junction to move ahead towards Ajni.
NHAI in its design had proposed a butterfly shaped crossover, similar to one at MIHAN bridge on Wardha Road, to enable rotational movement at Ujjwal Nagar junction only. But Metro bosses junked the said design on grounds of being unscientific and proposed just two arms, one for moving from Manish Nagar to Airport side and other for those coming from Ajni side and wanting to move further towards Manish Nagar, Besa and ahead.
Huge cranes on either side of the track at Manish Nagar lifted the boa string structure and helped in putting it in rightful place that was later secured with bolts.
Boa string bridge are normally preferred over traditional steel bridges as they are not only light on usage of metal but also are design in aesthetic way.
