Congress Govt would bring a legislation to protect the interest of farmers of Chhattisgarh: Baghel

Hitting out at National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said that the NDA government is anti-farmer and it is only benefitting corporate houses. Addressing a press conference at State Congress office Rajiv Bhawan on Sunday, Chief Minister Baghel said that agriculture is the subject matter of State and only legislative assembly can make law on agriculture subject, but the Central Government has passed three Farm Bills, the Farming Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill and the Essential Commodities (amendment) Bill in the Parliament to benefit the corporate houses.

Central Government has passed controversial farm bills in Parliament without taking farmers, farmers’ unions and the states into confidence, Baghel alleged. There are no provisions of minimum support price (MSP) in the bills and they are moving to end MSP on crops. The existence of the public distribution system (PDS) is also in danger under the NDA government. The provisions in the bills pose a threat to the survival of mandis of the states. The private players will take undue advantage of the bills as the provisions in the bills allow them to procure and stock which will apparently increase black-marketing of essential commodities, said Baghel.

Baghel said that the Congress party has launched a nationwide protest to oppose these bills. Replying to a query, Baghel said that the Congress government in Chhattisgarh would bring legislation in the next assembly session to protect the interest of farmers of the state if the bills are approved. Bhupesh Baghel has demanded the Central government to implement the “One Nation, One Market” system. He said that the Central government should implement Swaminathan Commission’s report on farmers. The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister has requested President of India Ram Nath Kovind not to sign the bills for the sake of crores of farmers in the country.

Forest Minister Mohammad Akbar, Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey, Labour Minister Dr Shiv Kumar Dahariya, Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) Vice President Girish Dewangan, Treasurer Ramgopal Agrawal and CPCC’s Communication Department Chairman Shailesh Nitin Trivedi were also present at the press conference.
