IT IS Shiva Iyer again. The in-form player won all his nine matches to pocket fifth title of the season emerging champion in the 13th edition of district-level Online Blitz Chess Tournament (OLBCT) that was held on Sunday through the platform of lichess.org.
 
As many as 35 players participated in the tournament. The event, only for players from Nagpur district, was conducted by Nagpur District Chess Association (NDCA). Playing with white pieces, Iyer got the better of Akshay Patil on the top board of ninth and final round. Shubham Lakudkar, also having light coloured pieces at his disposal, outwitted Suhan Deshpande on the second board of the final round. Iyer was the clear cut winner as the second placed Shubham Lakudkar could muster 7.5 points. Priyanshu Patil with 6.5 points picked the third spot.
 
Four players scored an identical six points to take the 4-7 spots. Iyer stamped his authority in the one-day tourney comprehensively beating SK Laha, Harsh Nachankar, Sumedh Ramteke, Shubham Lakudkar, Rushikesh Lohit, Suhan Deshpande, Arush Chitre, Ramteke Ayush and Akshay Patil on his way to the title. The players had five minutes each to finish the game. The weekly competition is gaining importance and interest among city’s chess players. The total prize money on offer was Rs 3000. The tournament was conducted under the supervision of IA Pravin Pantawane and FA Umesh Panbude.
