CITY’S swimming coaches made most of the opportunities that came their way during the lockdown period. With no sporting activity, the sportspersons and coaches had not much to do. But Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Swimming Federation of India (SFI) came up with online ‘Swim Coaches Knowledge Series # 1’ for enhancing the knowledge of Indian swimming coaches. The trio of Roshan Choudhary, Pravin Rohad and Shubham Itankar enrolled for the series and got the advance knowledge of technical aspects and soft skills of coaching.

With this knowledge workshop the coaches may utilise plan their coaching programme more effectively in the coming session. More than 700 swimming coaches and swimmers attended the workshop daily wherein sessions were conducted by Indian and foreign coaches. After the ‘Swim Coaches Knowledge Series 1’, SFI organised exam based on the sessions under the aegis of National Test Agency (NTA) in June. Choudhary, who is already an ASCA Level 3 and Short NIS coach and is working as swimming coach at Centre Point School, Katol Road, Nagpur cleared twin tests. “I passed the swimming exam with A Grade (70% and above) while in sports science exam, I got B Grade (50 to 69%). Only 8 swimming coaches got ‘A’ grade from all over India. More than 540 coaches appeared for the exams and 447 cleared,” said Choudhary while talking to ‘The Hitavada’.

“The coaches and trainers from all around the globe were there in the workshop who gave great opportunities to us for updating ourselves by their valuable knowledge. In this workshop very innovative techniques were explain by experts that will be very useful to develop students’ skills. “Swimming Federation of India along with Sports Authority of India have provided a great channel by starting the swim series. It provided an opportunity to interact with many national and international coaches. We learned a lot from well known coaches around the world,” Choudhary added. Pravin Rohad, who is also a swimming coach at CPS, Katol Road, cleared the swimming exam with B Grade.

“I am thankful to SAI and SFI for this wonderful joint venture in enhancing the knowledge of Indian swimming coaches and would like to see more such workshops on regular basis in future too for better performance of our coaches and eventually our swimmers,” Rohad remarked. Shubham Itankar, who is a junior coach with Victorious Swimming Club also passed with B Grade. “The online workshop that was conducted by SAI and SFI was really an innovative one. We got to know new things which we did not know during our swimming days. They showed us each stroke with detailed illustration. The day to day online sessions and exams were really helpful in updating the knowledge. It was a great exposure to learn from international and experienced coaches from all over the country.

I am sure that knowledge gained from this online series will be useful for training upcoming swimmers,” said a satisfied Itankar. Following topics were covered during the sessions — Orientation by Partha Majumder, Fundamentals of Swim Coaching by Nihar Ameen, Long Axis Stroke (Free & Back) by Peter Carswel, Short Axis Stroke (Breaststroke & Butterfly) by Mriguel Looper, Technique Start, Turn & Finishing by Ilya Gussakav, Adaptation in Stroke Pattern and Pacing: Distance Vs Sprints Event by Pradeep Kumar (National Swimming Coach), Mind Training, Nutrition and others.
