Sensation prevailed in Ajni area when a history-sheeter was brutally murdered by three persons in a saloon in Hawrapeth area of Ajni police station, police officials said. The accused have been arrested by the police. The deceased was identified as Sumit Pingale (23), a resident of Chandra Nagar, Howrahpeth. Devendra Joshi (52), his son Nihal Devendra Joshi (24), both residents of Chandra Nagar, Hawrapeth and Rishab Raut (25), a resident of Alankar Nagar, were arrested by the police in the evening hours. A police official said that Sumit was a dreaded goon of the area. He had assaulted one Pramod Tambe in 2016. He was also convicted in this case, but later got bail from the High Court. After this, Sumit and his minor partner had killed Pramod's son Sahil in August 2019. Since then residents of the area were afraid of him.Sumit and Nihal’s families live in the same locality.
 
A quarrel ensued between him and Sumit’s girlfriend on Thursday. Nihal had snatched away her phone. The girl then went to the Ajni Police Station to file a complaint against Nihal. Nihal was also having a dispute with his wife. After a long time his wife returned home. Nihal and his wife went to Ajni Police Station and recorded their statement that she would not visit his place again. Sumit also went to the police station when he learnt that his girlfriend was filing a report to the police. He suspected that all this was happening at the behest of Nihal. On Friday, a wordy duel ensued between Sumit and Nihal during which Sumit allegedly doled out threats to Nihal.
 
As Sumit is accused in a murder case, Nihal was scared of him.Nihal had rented a room in front of his house to a barber Rahul for salon. On Sunday afternoon, Sumit reached the shop for a haircut. After spotting Sumit sitting in the shop, Nihal called his friend Rishabh. Both went inside the shop. Sumit realised something amiss after seeing the two together. Still, he tried to put pressure on both by again issuing threats.
 
An ugly fight broke out between them in the shop. Meanwhile, Rahul escaped from the spot. As Nihal and Rishabh put the shutter of the shop down, Sumit was unable to escape from the shop. They attacked Sumit with a steel rod and a sharp-edged weapon. Devendra also entered the shop and the three brutally killed Sumit, police said. DCP Zone-IV Dr Akshay Shinde and Police Inspector Pradeep Rayanavar arrived at the spot with police staff. Sumit was lying in a pool of blood. The body was sent to hospital for post-mortem. The accused were arrested by the police in the evening.An offence under Section 302 and 34 of Indian Penal Code was registered by Ajni police. Further investigation is on.
