ONE of the key members of Vidarbha squad all-rounder Shrikant Wagh, who formed a potent pace attack with India pacer Umesh Yadav, has decided to part ways with Vidarbha owing to his snub for the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. “I write this with gratitude towards VCA for giving me the opportunity to serve them as a cricketer for over 13 years. These were the best days of my cricketing career.

“However, I have decided to part ways with the association. I have made this decision keeping in mind my exclusion from the ongoing SMA (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy), which I didn’t anticipate. “I feel I have a few more years of cricket left in me and my services can be utilised in a better manner by different teams around the country,” Wagh’s three paragraphs on Instagram post read. The 32-years-old left-armer born in Buldana district, has been a Vidarbha regular since his Under-13 days.

Only a few players from Vidarbha have been able to break into Indian Premier League teams and Wagh, for his all-round abilities, was part of Rajasthan Royals and Pune Warriors India teams. He won Man of the Match award on his debut for Pune against Kings XI Punjab. In the last edition of the popular league held in Middle East, Wagh travelled with Rajasthan Royals as part of the team’s bowling squad. Talking to ‘The Hitavada’ on Wednesday, Wagh confirmed the development. “I mailed the letter of my intentions this morning but have got no reply from their side. Neither I am an outsider or I am new and after being dropped from the squad I thought I must self represent. Let’s see what happens. I also talked to selectors and the vice-president. There has been no reply, no talks, no reasons for not selecting me.” lamented Wagh, who has also been part of Central Zone and India A teams.

“I am not talking about the four-day games. But look at my record overs the years in the shorter formats. I have done very well. I travelled to Dubai for the IPL last season. People here are talking about youngsters. But I think the selection must be performance based. If you are not selecting a senior player, they must have informed me well in time so that I would have searched for other options,” he added. When asked whether he would reconsider his decision if VCA approaches him. “If they select me in the team of 15 I may still come...and I am confident that I can still deliver. In my reports all these years, I have always been mentioned as well behaved well mannered. I am not targetting any individual but this was not expected. It really hurts that I am not in the squad of 22. Two years ago, I had an opportunity but since I am emotinally attachtced with Vidarbaha I did not go,” cleared Wagh. The athletically built Wagh is among a selected few to have taken all ten wickets in an innings. He achieved the feat while playing for Stokesley Cricket Club in the North Yorkshire & South Durham Cricket League in England a couple fo years ago.
