INDIA’S fall of six places to 86th among 180 countries in a Corruption Perception Index (CPI) is a reminder to the entire society that rooting out corruption is still a distant dream in the country. The index ranks countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people. India has been ranked 86th with a score of 40. Despite stringent measures put in by various authorities the scourge of corruption continues to haunt India. All the counter-measures look to have stuck in the ‘work in progress’ mode or simply not being implemented with full sincerity. The situation also raises serious questions on the vigilance mechanism across all sectors, public as well as private. Either some elements are hand-in-glove with the perpetrators or simply not equipped to carry out their job effectively. However, looking at the brighter side of the problem, a possibility cannot be ruled out that more and more cases of corruption are now coming out in the open thus making the number swell. It has happened in the banking sector when the threshold of measuring Non Performing Assets (NPAs) was relaxed and the number of NPAs suddenly went on a upswing. One hopes it is the latter possibility.
