Virendra Singh, a Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as Medical Education Commissioner of Maharashtra. This is for the first time that State has created such a post. Before being appointed as the Commissioner, Virendra Singh was working as Special Secretary and Commissioner, Medical Education and Special Secretary, Ayurved in Government of Rajasthan. During his short tenure at Nagpur as Municipal Commissioner Virendra Singh had earned his name. Since past about 3 years Government was thinking about creating this post in the wake of rising responsibilities in the department. Two days ago, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Government took the decision and on Wednesday Virendra was given the responsibility.
 
Virendra Singh was holding additional charge as Director of Rajasthan Medical Education Society. According to Minister of Medical Education Amit Deshmukh, the experience of Virendra Singh at Rajasthan will help the State to shape the department. The post being held by Virendra Singh will be above the post of Director. Singh held various key posts in Maharashtra including Commissioner, Skill Development, Employment and Entrepreneurship; and Director of Information Technology in Government of Maharashtra. A 2006-batch officer, Virendra Singh was working with Air India before writing the UPSC exam.
