TITLE favourite Jennifer Varghese and Ikshika Umate registered victories in their respective age categories on the opening day of the RYP-Dr Ramesh Yashwant Prabhoo Memorial 1st Maharashtra State Ranking Table Tournament 2021-2022, conducted under the auspices of the MSTTA and played at the Prabodhankar Thackeray Krida Sankul, Vile Parle on Friday.

City’s Jennifer moved into the second round of the girls Under-15 age category while Ikshika entered the Round of 16 with and easy win.

However, Ikshika went down fighting in the girls Under-15.

The Suburban Table Tennis Association’s and top seed Sana D’Souza encountered a strong challenge from Nagpur’s Ikshika singles second round match.

Sana started confidently by winning the first two games, but Ishika showed great determination to win the next two and force the match to the wire.

In the decider Sana regained her composure and managed to stay ahead in the game before completing a hard-fought 11-6, 15-13, 9-11, 6-11 and 11-7 win.

However, Ikshika enjoyed smooth sailing in the girls’ under-13 competition.

The Nagpur paddler proved too good for Thane’s Sara Sheth and cruised to a 11-2, 11-3, 11-7 win to advance to the Round of 16.

In an another U-15 girls encounter, Jennifer defeated Janhavi Kalsekar of Nasik 3-1 to move up.

The city lass started well with an 11-9 win. She continued her form to take the next game 11-5, but lost the third 8-11. Jennifer regained her composure to seal the deal with a 11-6 win.
