EVEN as all the Government of India has embarked upon increasing pace of total vaccination of the population, the “greatest threat” to overcome the coronavirus pandemic remains vaccine hesitancy. The concern was once again spelt out by Mr. Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India (SII) and it has to be dealt with innovative methods at all levels. The hesitancy to get inoculated stems from the rumour-mongering and misinformation campaign undertaken by the rogue elements in the society. There was also evidence of the campaigns being run by anti-India forces operating in the cyberspace. While the State Governments are working hard to deal with the challenge by taking up door-to-door vaccination programmes, there is a need of an integrated approach to dismantle the hesitancy from health authorities as well as social workers. The Government has done well with the awareness programmes and benefits of vaccination but many parts of rural India are still living in a denial mode. Convincing this section is the biggest challenge for the health machinery due to their adamant stand against the vaccine. A multi-pronged strategy involving locals can only help in tackling the threat.
