THE spate of raids and searches launched across the country by the Income Tax department as well as Anti-Corruption Bureau presents the gravity of the problem of corruption dogging India. Government agencies have been on the toes to nail the corrupt who are finding different ways to dodge the system and stash illegal income amassed through gross corruption. Wednesday’s ACB raids on government officials in Karnataka have shown how deep the malaise has grown.

Wads of currency stacked in drainage pipe and ceiling at the residence of a junior PWD engineer is a pointer of the larger nexus in operation to fleece the Government and State exchequer. The I-T Department and ACB are doing a yeoman’s service to expose the corrupt elements in the system but the larger issue is of the loose economic morality of a section of the society. The raids and subsequent action will take care of the problem at hand but there is still no solution to stop the rot in the value system of the society. The corrupt element has led to corrosion in the country’s economy. They are allowed to flourish by the society itself for its reluctance to expose their misdeeds. Countering the menace is now a moral issue.
