THIS is one news that entire country must feel proud of: For the first time in India the number of women has surpassed men. The figures released by National Family and Health Survey-5 has put the women:men sex ratio at 1,020:1,000 which indicates a massive demographic shift towards women’s empowerment. Previous NFHS urveys in 2005-06 and 2015-16 had shown a decline in the sex ratio following which multiple measures were put in place to secure the girl child.

The upswing in the numbers is a clean affirmation of the success of those measures including implementation of the PC and PNDT Act, nutrition and family welfare interventions. The new figures have brought a much-needed correction in the skewed sex ratio and have put India in the league of the developing nations for fulfilling the attributes of combating gender bias and disparities. The good news is also an indicator of the change in healthcare facilities in the rural areas as the survey has found out that 88.6 per cent of the births in the country were delivered in a health facility. There is also a reason to believe in the shift in societal thinking towards a girl child. Though there is a long way to go to uproot gender bias, a start has clearly been made.
