Soham Jane held his serve and composure to beat Rohit Mirpuri 8-5 in the best of 15 format to clinch the men’s singles title of the Nagpur District Championship organised by Nagpur District Hardcourt Tennis Association at its Ram Nagar courts on Sunday. In women’s final, Kalyani Somewar defeaed Tanaya Choudhary 8-2 in best of 15 format to emerge champion. In the men’s semis, Jane and Rohit Mirpuri made it to the final defeating Om Dhok and Dr Alok Umre comfortably by 6-2 and 6-1 margin respectively. Both lads displayed grit and determination. Rohit took the lead and raced to 4-1 but Soham came back strongly to level and go past 5-4 with fierce shots and placements. Rohit made quite a few unforced errors which helped Soham gain in confidence. In the women’s semi-final, Tanaya beat Shivangi Prasad 6-1 to set up the summit clash with Kalyani.

Being the better ranked player, Kalyani took control of the final from the beginning and didn’t let Tanaya settle down, breaking her serve twice. In the men’s doubles final, the much fancied pair of Soham Jane and Anand Marathe beat their rivals Om Dhok and Pankaj Bendre 8-6 to bag the winner’s trophy. It was a pleasure to see young lads fight it out for every point. Each point was fought fair and square and both sides were pumped up with each shot they hit on the other side. In the prize distribution function, Dr Sudhir Bhiwapurkar, Treasurer MSLTA, Dr Darshan Dakshindas and coaching team of NDHTA gave away the trophies and certificates to the winners and runners-up. Vijay Naidu, Tournament Director, conducted the function. Vishal Landge, Tournament Supervisor, conducted the tournament efficiently.
