NINE months after the military junta took control of Government in Myanmar by jailing State Counselor Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, the country is still reeling under wanton bloodshed and torture of civilians. The United Nations team has presented a grim report of the situation in Myanmar where over 37,000 people, including women and children, have fled their homes fearing mass killing by the Tatmadaw.

Situation is much horrible in the restive provinces like Rakhine and Magway where the Rohingya Muslims are fleeing country and taking shelter in neighbouring countries. International reports have counted systematic manner of torture on civilians, activists, politicians and journalists by the military but apart from a condemnation nothing concrete has come from the world community. The reluctance of the top powers in restoring democracy in Myanmar is perplexing. There has been a stoic silence on the suffering of the people as human rights bodies, too, have been lying low. Whether it is some external pressure or plain negligence towards tyranny, the entire international community has failed to respond to a humanitarian crisis of monumental proportions. And that’s sad.
