PRIME Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has done well to urge the youth of India to understand correctly what happened during the proceedings of the Constituent Assembly -- that met for the first time on December 9 as many as 75 years ago. Mr. Modi has felt that if India’s young generations underestood what kind of discourse took place in the Constituent Assembly meetings, they will become better citizens of the country. This really makes great sense. For, most unfortunately, let alone the youths, even others also are not aware of the details that dotted the discourse in the Constituent Assembly. This ignorance reflects in a general sense of lawlessness that prevails in the larger Indian society today.

The common people just do not know how the country’s grand statute document was crafted and how the founding fathers found their way around many obstacles. That knowledge is essential so that the current generations of people would know how to sort out many issues that come up in public debate today. Such an awareness will ensure that those politic al elements that misguide the common public on several counts would not be able to do so. That will be, thus, the greatest safeguard against any abuse of the constitution.
