“If there is a speed of 40 kmph, then there is a full chance of survival in the accident. If this speed is doubled, the chances of survival are only 20 per cent,” asserted Chairman of Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety and former Supreme Court Judge Abhay Sapre in a state-level review meeting held in the district regarding road safety. Sapre gave information about the statistics of road accidents in Chhattisgarh, India and many countries of the world and also did a comparative review.

He said that in countries where there is more awareness about road safety, there has been a sharp decline in their number. Giving the example of Vietnam, he said that due to taking very serious measures in this regard, there has been a significant decline in the number of deaths in road accidents. Justice Sapre said that maximum deaths occur due to speeding, followed by non-adoption of safety measures like not wearing helmet, not wearing seat belt etc. Drunk driving also causes a large number of deaths. He said that if people are aware of their safety and follow the safety rules, then most of the deaths can be reduced. The officers related to road safety should work very seriously in this matter and ensure compliance of safety rules. With strict monitoring, people automatically start adopting traffic rules. Secretary Traffic Topeshwar Verma was also present in the meeting.

He said that the government has given special funds for road safety. Keeping in mind the road safety, the Institute of Driving Training and Research Institute has been built in Tendua at a cost of 17 crores. E-track has been built at RTO, Raipur at a cost of Rs 5.22 crore. IG OP Pal informed that the administration is conducting regular checks as per the guidelines of Motor Vehicle Act. Awareness program is also being conducted. Collector Dr Sarveshwar Narendra Bhure informed that regular review meetings are held regarding road safety and decisions are taken accordingly. Work is being done by giving top priority to the safety of the people. SP Badrinarayan Meena informed that work is being done for traffic awareness in rural areas through Anjor Rath. Traffic DSP Gurjit Singh said that the number of deaths in road accidents has come down due to continuous precautionary measures being taken in Durg district.
