During the tenure of Dr Dileep Mhaisekar as Vice Chancellor and Dr Mohan Khamgaonkar as Pro-Vice Chancellor, the Maharashtra Univesity of Health Sciences (MUHS) has provided a boost to its regional centres. Both are of the opinion that regional centres should be strengthened. Supporting the efforts of Dr Mhaisekar and Dr Khamgaonkar, now Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh too has stressed for creating research facilities at these centres. Amit Deshmukh being the Minister of Medical Education is Pro-Chancellor of the university.
 
Admitting the fact that the medical colleges in State lack research activities, Deshmukh said, “If medical colleges can’t conduct research, the regional centres can play the role of bridge between university and medical colleges. The regional centres can remove that lacuna by volunteering the activity of research.” While talking to ‘The Hitavada’ Amit Deshmukh expressed the need of zero ragging in medical colleges. In fact Dr Mhaisekar and Dr Khamgaonkar have already taken the efforts in that direction. They have brought out a report with recommendations to make medical colleges ragging-free. According to Deshmukh the regional centres can be used in several ways.
 
He suggested to create counseling centres at the regional centres to help students resolve their personal ssues. Regional centre should work on different fronts to improve the research and quality of education offered by MUHS and make youngsters aware of different opportunities in medical sciences, added Deshmukh. Deshmukh feels, medical colleges should regularly conduct activities where ex-students should participate. In every medical, dental colleges the alumni clubs should be set-up. The experience of the alumni will help in the growth of medical colleges. 
 
Deshmukh suggests 7 pc fund for medical Amit Deshmukh, Medical Education Minister has suggested that State Government should provide 7 per cent of its funds to medical department. He has spoken to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his Deputy Ajit Pawar who is also the Finance Minister. Last year the allocation for medical education was much less. 
 
Ayurved, Homoeo, physiotherapy colleges soon Maharashtra Government had last year announced medical college in Nashik. It got nod from State Cabinet. Now, Deshmukh wants to start colleges where Ayurved, Physiotherapy and Homoeopathy can be started. According to him Government is very much positive about starting the above colleges.
